Meeting Minutes of Illinois Bio-Grid, 06 Jul 2005

Attendees

1. Discussion Topics

Web Content

  • We need to consolidate our three websites and make them more intuitive to navigate and have more meaningful content(see below) on them.

Infrastructure responsibilities:

  • Each Senior researcher will have a primary and secondary responsibility for two or more of the following areas. They will be responsible for maintaining anything in the area across the IBG computational nodes we have access to.
    • webservers
      • OGCE, Certificate Authority
    • grid middleware
    • databases
    • OS
    • 3rd party software (omssa, lutefisk, homegrown ...)
    • subversion, compilers, libraries
  • Some of these are overlapping/closely related (ie. webservers & databases or webservers & OGCE & gridmiddleware) and therefore someone who is primary on one probably will be a secondary on a closely related one.

Project Responsibilities (web content)

  • High Level abstract / Goal of Project
  • sub-projects [assignments]
  • future projects / directions
  • Tasks in progress [due dates, assigned to?]
  • Milestones

Meeting Structure

  • It was thought that we don't get as much done as a whole group all together and we may be better off having a project-based group meeting every two weeks in place of the regular meetings. We would still have the full meetings every two weeks. Everyone will still have one meeting a week to go to depending on the week whether it is the full meeting or a project meeting. This may engage people to be more active in choosing a project.

Presentations

  • This is something we use to do and still do intermittently but I would like to see more presentations on technical matters of bioinformatics/UNIX/programming/parallel_computing ... The goal is to present something that you know well and others in the group are curious. Topics include: MPI, autoconf/automake, debugging core dumps, PEAKS vs. Mascot, a comparison/review of de novo sequencers, ...

Linux Access

  • People reported that one of the major difficulties were getting into Linux, if they have never used it before. FreeNX would allow people to remote control XWindow sessions from their home computers (even with operating systems from Redmond). That means that they can use KDE with its graphical editors and the konqueror for example. This should make things much easier for linux newbies.
